Goodbye Food Pyramid… hello dinner plate…
The Obama administration is about to ditch the food pyramid, that symbol of healthy eating for the last two decades. In its place officials are dishing up a simple, plate-shaped symbol, sliced into wedges for the basic food groups and half-filled with fruits and vegetables.
I have to say that the ‘best’ version of the food symbol was the old food pyramid, though it wasn’t the best that it could have been.
The old Food Pyramid had grains on the bottom, then Fruits and Veggies, and then the items that we don’t need as much were near the top, with oils at the peak.
Dr. McDougall decided to lop off the top of the pyramid, and make what’s called the McDougall Trapezoid. It doesn’t have the less healthy items, which our bodies really don’t need.
Now the old food pyramid has been gone for a while, replaced with one that, in my own opinion is difficult to read.
Scroll down to see it.
Now I’m looking forward to seeing what the new, ‘Dinner Plate’ symbol will look like, I have not seen it yet.
While researching this blogpost I came across a few other food pyramids, I think that this Asian one is neat
and at last there is also a Mediterranean food pyramid as well, quite different from the Mediterranean diet that I used to hear about a lot…
It is actually quite similar to the Asian food pyramid.
