Yet another reason to eat healthy foods…

The Harvard School of Public Health sent a strong message to the United States Department of Agriculture USDA and nutrition experts everywhere with the recent release of its “Healthy Eating Plate” food guide. The university was responding to the USDA’s new MyPlate guide for healthy eating, which replaced the outdated and misguided food pyramid.Harvard’s nutrition experts did not pull punches, declaring that the university’s food guide was based on sound nutrition research and more importantly, not influenced by food industry lobbyists. The greatest evidence of its research focus is the absence of dairy products from the “Healthy Eating Plate” based on Harvard’s assessment that “…high intake can increase the risk of prostate cancer and possibly ovarian cancer.” The Harvard experts also referred to the high levels of saturated fat in most dairy products and suggested that collards, bok choy, fortified soy milk, and baked beans are safer choices than dairy for obtaining calcium, as are high quality supplements.

We found somebody that likes Paula Deen about as much as we do!I don’t make them. But I will lose more weight this year. Out of fear.

I was just at the grocery store, standing in the check-out line, which has become a gauntlet of terror. It’s the magazines.

Today, it was Paula Deen, round-cheeked and grinning, teeth bleached white, eyes like cold blue LEDs, photoshopped into perfectly plasticky plump grandmotherliness — a grandma with the complexion of an irradiated sixteen year old, glowing and sparkling — and she was holding a bowl of livid yellow macaroni and cheese that was bigger than her head. And I said to myself, this is the new face of death. And I said to myself, this is the American face of death, the death of viscid excess, the death that ends not in bones, but a quivering mass of adipocere. And I said to myself, don’t piss yourself, Myers, but that’s goddamn terrifying.

There are a lot of good reasons to eliminate meat from your diet. Vegetarian diets are better for the environment, less carcinogenic, and result in better health outcomes for those that follow them. Any plant eater knows this, and the vegetarians I know happily stick to their diet regime without a second thought.

However, certain objections to ditching meat routinely come up. And most of them are junk. You could fill a book with all the non-sensical reasons I’ve heard over the years from people who are certain that being a vegetarian is a bad idea. Some are convinced you’ll be forced to deprive your body of certain nutrients, or that eating plants means subjecting yourself to a prolonged starvation.

McDonald’s will be looking for a new source of eggs for many of its hugely popular Egg McMuffins. The fast food company says it “will no longer accept” eggs from one of the country’s biggest egg companies, Sparboe Farms, that is the subject of an ABC News investigation to be broadcast Friday on “20/20″ and “World News with Diane Sawyer” and was cited Thursday by the Food and Drug Administration for “significant…and serious violations” in the production of eggs.

Now a former executive from a large food company has decided to come out and tell the public about some things that the big food companies have been doing for the last twenty years…

A few weeks ago, I learned of a relatively new blog about food industry deception, but with an interesting twist. The blog’s author is Bruce Bradley, who spent over 15 years as a food marketer at companies like General Mills, Pillsbury, and Nabisco. He has since, in his words, “become more educated about the risks and environmental impact of eating processed foods,” and is now a CSA enthusiast.
